The ancient origins of yoga

tibetan yoga

There are many different types of yoga. Most are thought to have come from India, and are related to Hinduism. But many people (including me), believe (or know) that their origins are far older and more diverse. At one time, the techniques were included as part of certain paths of Buddhism, and also practiced by some early Christians and Zoroastrians.

The name Bodhi Tibetan Yoga is actually a misnomer, in that it isn't just one form of yoga, and the practices didn't originate in Tibet. However, long ago the teachings did "lodge" in certain places in Tibet. From what I've read, probably before working its way down to India, and becoming part of Hindu tradition.  These Bohdi techniques are ancient, and the monks strove to keep them pure by carefully passing on the techniques directly from teacher, to student monks in their monasteries, from the beginning of their order's existence.

Where did these techniques come from?  There are even conflicting stories about Buddha, or different Buddhas and their origins, within Buddhism itself. Imagine an order of monks who directly trace their written and oral history & lineage, back through Tibet, prior to Buddha, and beyond.  They claim that their written and verbal history indicates Buddha was a monk/teacher of their order, who traveled about, including into India. From what I've studied, there is no question that there was more than one teacher called Buddha.  In any case, the Buddhas spread their teachings, and our ways of attaining enlightenment and oneness, including unselfish love, humility, harmlessness, compassion, meditation, stretching, breathing and energy techniques. These techniques, along with meditations and interactions with teachers, was one of the tools these monks used for achieving oneness with all creation, all people, within themselves, and the Universal Spirit/God.

From what I've pieced together, the various Buddhas traveled Asia, where they initially brought the teachings to people in Tibet, then India, then other areas of the Orient.  The techniques and teachings were modified over the years, and became many different spiritual paths or "styles of yoga". It also gave birth to different paths of Buddhism. And even Judaism and Christianity. Wow. Some left behind or modified many of the other spiritual teachings, to focus on the physical techniques, to form the basis of modern yoga. Yet the name yoga still retains the essence of the path to oneness that its forefathers intended for it (the word yoga essential means "union").
